But, don’t feel comforted because I’m a bit complaining or because I can comfort myself for my hard work, and this may be something I’ll never know, so I’m swinging my decision. These are determined by fate, and now my voyage is postponed until the weather allows me to board the ship. Winter is harsh and severe, but spring prospects are good and it is considered a very early season, so maybe my voyage may be earlier than I expected. I will not do anything lightly: as long as the safety of others is committed to my care, you are enough to convince me of my prudence and consideration.
I cannot describe to you my feelings about the prospects of this business. I am going to convey to you the notion of trembling, half pleasure and half fear, which is impossible. I'm going to undeveloped areas, to "mist and snow", but I will never kill albatross. Therefore, please do not panic for my safety, or if I should return to you tired and painful like an "ancient sailor", please do not panic. You will smile at my allusion, but I will reveal a secret. I often attribute my love for the super dangerous ocean mystery to my work for the most imaginative modern poets. There is something in my soul that I don't understand. I'm almost hardworking, hard working,
But back to more important considerations. After crossing the vast ocean and returning from Africa or the southernmost cape of the United States, can I see you again? I dare not expect such a success, but I can't stand the opposite. Continue to provide every opportunity to write to me at present: at some point, when I need them most to support my spirit, I may receive a letter from you. I love you very tenderly. If you never hear from me again, please remember me.
Your affectionate brother
Robert Walton
Letter 3
To Mrs. Saville, England.
July 7th, 17th.
My dear sister,
I wrote a few lines in a hurry, saying that I was safe-and advanced during the voyage. This letter will arrive in England by a businessman on a voyage back home from Arkhangel. Fortunately than I am, I may not have seen my motherland for many years. However, I was uplifted: my soldiers were bold, apparently unwavering, and the danger of constantly passing through our floating ice without driving us forward seemed to frustrate them. We have reached a very high latitude; this is the climax of summer, and although the squally wind in the south is not as hot as in England, it quickly blows us to the coasts I desire to reach, breathing a certain degree of refurbished warmth.
So far, no incident has convinced us. One or two stiff winds and water leaks are accidents that experienced navigators can hardly remember. If nothing worse happens during our voyage, I will be very satisfied.
Adie, my dear Marguerite. Please rest assured, no matter it is me or you, I will not easily encounter danger. I will be calm, persistent and prudent.
But success will be my effort. Why not? So far, I have walked over and found a safe path on a roadless ocean. These stars themselves are the testimony and witness of my victory. Why not continue discussing this unconstrained but obedient element? What can stop a person's firm heart and firm will?
Therefore, my swollen heart poured out involuntarily. But I must finish. May God bless my beloved sister!
Letter 4
To Mrs. Saville, England.
August 5, 2017.
We had an accident unexpectedly, and I couldn't bear to record it, although you are likely to see me before you get these documents.
Last Monday, July 31st, we were almost surrounded by ice. The ice was closed in all directions, barely leaving her floating sea room. Our situation is a bit dangerous, especially when we are covered by thick fog. Therefore, we hope that there will be some changes in the atmosphere and weather.
At about two o'clock, the mist disappeared, and we were watched, stretching out in all directions, the wide and irregular ice field seemed to have no end. When some strange scenes suddenly caught our attention and made us scrupulous about our own situation, some of my comrades chanted that my thoughts became anxious. We felt a low carriage, fixed on a sled, being pulled by a dog, and driving for half a mile north. A humanoid person, obviously a huge figure, sits on a sleigh, guiding the dog. We watched the traveler's rapid progress with the telescope, until he lost himself in the distant ice and snow.
This kind of appearance has inspired our unparalleled miracle. As we believe, we are hundreds of miles away from any land; but this illusion seems to indicate that it is actually not as far away as we thought. However, because of being blocked by ice, it is impossible to follow his trail, which is what we pay most attention to.
About two hours after this happened, we heard the sound of the sea. Before night, the ice broke and released our boat. However, we stayed until morning, worried about meeting large loose masses floating in the dark after freezing. I profited from this break.
However, in the morning, I walked onto the deck at dawn and found that all the sailors were busy on the side of the ship, apparently chatting with people in the sea. In fact, it is just like what we have seen before, floating on a large piece of ice at night and drifting towards us. Only one dog is alive. But there was one person inside, and the sailors persuaded them to enter the ship. Like other travelers, he is not a savage resident of an undiscovered island, but a European. When I appeared on the deck, the captain said, "This is our captain. He will not let you perish in the high seas."
When perceiving me, the stranger spoke to me in English, albeit with a foreign accent. He said: "Before I board your ship, would you like to tell me the time you were tied up?"
You may be surprised when you hear this question raised by an endangered person. I should think that my ship will be a resource he cannot exchange, and he will not be able to exchange the most precious wealth on earth to afford it. . However, I replied that we are exploring the Arctic.
Hearing this news, he seemed very satisfied and agreed to join. Gosh! Margaret, if you see someone who succumbs to your safety, your surprises will be endless. His limbs were almost frozen, and his body shrank severely due to fatigue and pain. I have never seen a man in such pain. We tried to take him into the cabin, but once he got out of the fresh air, he fainted. So we brought him back to the deck and restored him to the animation by rubbing him with brandy and forcing him to swallow a small amount. When he showed signs of life, we wrapped him in a blanket and placed him near the chimney of the kitchen stove. Slowly, he recovered his health and ate a little soup, which restored him to perfect condition.
