Chapter 166: Path of horror

Steve wrote down his whereabouts on the paper and placed it in a prominent place in the living room.
Locked the doors and windows, the two ran down the old stairs, the greasy walls of the old apartment building could even reflect the reflection of people. They came to the road in a swift manner. On the roadside in the morning, the manhole cover was still hot .
Homeless people like to sleep on it, which can at least prevent them from freezing to death in winter nights, but this year is different. People’s cold comes from their hearts.
Two thin figures were wrapped in unfit cotton clothes. The cold wind made them tremble. Some darkened blood stains could be vaguely seen on the street pavement, which was left by the jumping boom last month.
They walked quickly around the blood stain, as if the corpse was still there.
   "How shall we go?"
Steve looked at the deserted street. Although he didn't know the meaning of the Great Depression, he understood the general meaning of the strangely quiet street.
"Take the subway, that's cheap." Bucky finished speaking, and took him to the street. The nearest subway station was still some distance away, and they had to cross a block.
Steve wrapped his clothes tightly, and he pinched the corner of his clothes.
   "But...I have no money."
   "Where is your pocket money?"
Bucky did not stop, and continued to drag him away.
"I gave it to my father last month. I want to buy food at home."
Although there is only a small amount of pocket money, nothing can be wasted.
"I know, but it's okay. Today's travel expenses count for me." Bucky smiled and patted his chest, jumping over a pool of sewage: "After all, I insisted on pulling you out."
The two of them are doing work to make money, not to play. Bucky can do it by himself, but he has to pay more for Steve's travel expenses alone, which makes Steve very embarrassed.
   "Buggy..."
"Okay, don't be like girls, we are good friends." Bucky made a disgusting expression. He was most afraid that Steve would look at him'affectionately'. The more moved his tone, the colder he felt: "Furthermore, we will earn more today. If we can exchange a few cents for road fare for a bunch of food, we are all big winners."
The empty streets are no longer the busiest of the past, and the road echoes with the sound of two people's footsteps, which looks like a ghost town.
The beautiful cars that used to be there are gone, now only occasionally some people wander on the street like walking dead, no one even looks at them, as if they don't exist.
But these days, Steve and Bucky have become accustomed to them. These people have become like this after the ‘stock market’.
He discussed this with Bucky and agreed that the ‘stock disaster’ should be a serious disease that can turn people into fools.
The two celebrated that their family did not become fools, and then they went on to sell newspapers, but the business can be imagined.
  ..............................
After bypassing the'living corpses', they got into the subway station. It was much warmer. Apart from them, there were more people than on the road, but these people were half dead, lying or sitting. on the ground.
They looked at the two children numbly, then quickly looked away and continued to be in a daze.
Bucky leaned close to Steve’s ear and whispered,
If we earn food, we won’t be able to take the subway when we come back. These people will even eat us.

Steve looked around, and walked forward quickly. Bucky's statement he believed deeply. The eyes of these people were terrible.
Finally surrounded by weird gazes, Bucky and Steve waited for the subway. They hurriedly hid and could feel the heart beating.
"God." Bucky crossed his chest and swallowed a mouthful of saliva: "These people seem to be weirder than before, like...like..."
"It's like a dead person, right, but a dead person who intends to eat us." Steve pressed his heart and said what Bucky wanted to say.
Those people seem to have no human emotions at all, and only appetite and darkness in their hollow eyes.
Bucky patted Steve on the shoulder, and the two of them found a place to sit in the empty carriage. The cold seat gave them a sense of security.
"You are right, it, we shouldn't have gone out today."
"It doesn't matter, it's safe during the day." Steve calmed down. He knew that even if these people were crazy, they wouldn't behave like passersby during the day.
Before dark, the two could take the tram home on the ground, but it would cost a few cents.
"I hope I have better luck today."
Bucky nodded, and he pressed his lips hard. He has this habit, which happens when he is nervous.
In the dark tunnel, there is only the faint light in the subway, and the hearts of both of them are swayed.
I didn't think it was when there were many people, but now the empty space brings them fear.
It's too quiet here, and the deadly empty space makes the two of them stand on their hair.
The inside of the carriage that can't be seen at a glance has not been cleaned for an unknown period of time. There are and stains everywhere, like a port hit by a typhoon.
It is estimated that only the driver of the entire subway train is a living person~EbookFREE.me~ This makes them feel worse. All they can hear is the sound of each other's breathing, and the collision of wheels and rails outside the window.
"Should we go to the front car? Talk to the driver?" After a while, Bucky suggested to Steve.
"No, don't disturb other people's work. We are the only ones here. It's actually quite safe."
Steve rejected the proposal, at least their carriage is okay.
Fortunately, he refused. If the two of them go to the front of the car, then they will see the driver driving the subway numbly. They are ‘living corpses’. It is estimated that they will be scared to death.
"The city became like a cemetery. I went to the cemetery once and got sick when I went home." Bucky said to Steve again that this topic didn't help them in their current situation. He just had nothing to say.
Steve squeezed out a smile, took something out of his pocket and handed it to Bucky, a piece of fruit hard candy in a very simple package.
"My mother gave me this when she was out, eat it, sweet things will make you feel better."
Bucky took the candy and held it on the armrest patted aside. The inferior candy immediately turned into two halves. He spread his hand and tore the wrapping paper.
   "We are one and half."
Steve smiled and picked up half of Bucky's hand: "That's OK."
In the era when there was no concept of ‘zombies’, the two experienced the fear of biohazard through brain replenishment. They have to say that the experience of going out greatly increased their courage.
As long as they have each other by their side, encourage and support each other, then there will be no difficulties that cannot be overcome.
At least for now, Steve, who has not yet become Captain America, and Bucky, who is not yet the Winter Soldier, think so.
